How to Steward the Growth?

The TBC Sunday School ministry can be good stewards of this recent growth by giving attention to 2 areas:

1. By Stewarding our PEOPLE – KEEPING GOOD ATTENDANCE RECORDS

Why Taking Attendance Matters

  • Presence Precedes Pastoring: We cannot shepherd people if we do not know they are in the room. Attendance is not about tracking numbers; it is about tracking souls.
  • Spotting the Drift: Keeping accurate records allows us to notice when a regular member misses two or three weeks in a row so we can reach out proactively.
  • The Goal: Get Names and Contact Information
  • NEXT STEPS CARDS are GOLDEN!!!!

2. By Stewarding our CLASS TIME.

Elevating the Sunday Experience: Creating a “Sticky” Class

The Power of “Sticky” Environments

·      No Wasted Sundays: Every week must offer value. If someone chooses to wake up early, get dressed, and drive to church, we owe them a transformative, engaging hour.

·      Belonging Precedes Believing: For many, the social and relational atmosphere of the room is the bridge that connects them to the deeper spiritual truths being taught.

·      The Goal: Shift the culture from “I should go to Sunday School” to “I don’t want to miss what happens this week.”

Practical Strategies for Leaders

Group these core elements into a three-part checklist for your class every single week:

🍲 1. Radical Hospitality & Atmosphere

  • Have Food: Create a sign-up list to have some type of simple food every Sunday.  Food breaks down walls and gets people talking.
  • The “Zero Dead Air” Rule: Play upbeat background music before and after class. A silent room feels intimidating; a room filled with music and chatter feels alive.
  • Enlist Class Host/Hostess 

🎲 2. Intentional Connection (Icebreakers)

  • The 5-Minute Warm-Up: Never jump straight into the lesson. Start with a fast, low-stakes icebreaker question that every single person in the room can answer. 
  •  Get People Moving: Periodically use games or questions to get people moving around the room, so they meet someone they don’t know well, forcing organic connections. 
  • Get People Sharing: Ask for prayer requests and then intentionally pray for them.  Follow up afterwards. 

📖 3. Dynamic, High-Prep Teaching

  • Over-Prepare the Lesson: A poorly prepped teacher reads straight from a manual and kills engagement.  
  • Kill the Monologue: Avoid the 45-minute lecture. Transition to a collaborative teaching style: ask questions and allow time for discussion.
