Classes that Reach: 7 Observations to Help Your Sunday School Class become more effective at Outreach

412 Meeting | January 21, 2024 at 4pm | Reaching People Through Your Class

There are many issues that can make Sunday School more effective in reaching people.  Here are 7 observations that will help your Sunday School become more effective in outreach.

  1. Those who visit the church are the greatest prospects for salvation, baptism, and church membership.
  2. Most unchurched people attend church because of a relationship they have with a friend or family member.
  3. Guests and prospects should be visited and cultivated by those of their potential Sunday School class.
    • Relationships need to be cultivated.
    • Someone specific needs to “own” the person for Jesus.
  4. The initial steps in outreach efforts are given to discerning what ministry looks like for guests.
    • Guest Card
    • Attendance Taking
    • Discernment Ministry
    • Activities both formal and informal
  5. People must be cared for and assimilated quickly, and they have many lost friends and family who need to be reached.
  6. Getting people zealous about outreach is rarely a “quick fix” proposition.  Discpleship, equipping, and emphasis require perseverance and focus.
  7. All the planning in the world will not replace an appopriately aggressive, obedient spirit to “go out into the highways and hedges and compel them to come in, that my house may be full.” (Luke 14:23)

“When it comes to evangelism, it is better to err on the side of aggressiveness than on the side of passiveness.   People are dying and going to hell. At the rate we are losing the world, it is safe to say we have erred on the side of being too timid.  In our efforts to not offend anyone, we have lost the much needed boldness to share Christ.”

“Aint hardly nobody been saved what ain’t been went after!”

Practical Next Steps!  Answer the following questions with your group.:

  1. Do you have someone who owns taking attendance and getting guest cards?  Name Count = Head Count.
  2. Review your class roll.  We have given you the report for your class.  Is there anyone you do not know?  Are there any lost people?  Anyone that needs to be baptized?
  3. Who is currently involved in weekly outreach in your class?  Who could be?  Who should be?
